Frequently Asked Questions

Chiropody is a regulated healthcare profession focusing on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of foot diseases and disorders by medical, surgical, or palliative means.

A Chiropodist (pronounced: ‘ker-ro-po-dist’) is a primary health care provider, providing a variety of medical services ranging from nail and skin care to orthotics and in-office surgeries. As recognized and regulated health professionals, Chiropodists assess and provide treatment including management of acute and chronic conditions. Also, they play a role in the prevention of injury and disability and in promoting foot health and wellbeing.

There is no significant difference between Chiropodists and Podiatrists in Ontario. Both are primary healthcare providers specializing in the treatment of lower limb disorders. The College of Chiropodists is the regulating body.

In 1980, the Ontario government adopted the UK foot care model. The term “Chiropodist” has since been used to describe footcare professionals in Ontario. Chiropodists are generally trained in the United Kingdom or Canada, while podiatrists are typically trained in the United States. Since 1993, no podiatrist designations have been granted in Ontario, and those holding the title Podiatrist registered to practice in Ontario before 1993.

Most extended health insurance plans cover Chiropody or it is paid out of pocket. Some insurance companies require a co-pay for treatment. If you are unsure, please check your chiropody coverage.

Chiropody is NOT covered by OHIP.
